As I continue my Direct Sales Mentoring, this is part three of my DISC  training.

Four women set off on a road trip for their college reunion! Denise is driving the car. “Hurry up, she says, I have a heavy foot and we need to be the first to arrive! I don’t want to miss anything!”

Iris quickly jumps into the front passenger seat. ”I have to sit up front because I get car sick,” she says. “Besides, it’s going to be so much fun; we can sing songs, play music, stop for some shopping. I don’t know how to read a map at all, but don’t worry, we’ll be fine. I just love hanging out with my girlfriends.”

Suzy and Carol sit in the back seat quietly. “I hope that we get good cell reception along the way. I’ll need to check in on the family several times”, says Suzy. Carol seems to be the voice of reason in the car. “Now slow down, I don’t want to get lost”, she says. I printed out the MapQuest of the entire route; I have made the hotel reservations, calculated how many times we will need to stop for gas along the way!”

“Okay, let’s hit the road, says Denise! “I don’t like this traffic. I think I know a short cut.” Iris isn’t paying any attention. She is busy chatting away. “There’s a special reception we don’t want to miss. I wonder what they will have to eat!” Iris says, “Oh wait, I think that was our exit!” (But she was holding the map upside down)

Denise gets irritated. “I knew you didn’t know how to read a map. Now we are going to be late. We should already be there by now. You know how I hate to stand in lines. There will be a big line when we check in to our hotel.”

Suzy calmly says, “Slow down, you are going to get a ticket. If you get pulled over, you are going to pay for the ticket, not us.”

Carol is putting information into the GPS that the other women neglected to notice was in the car. “I wish I would have turned this on in the beginning. There are so many helpful things in this gadget. It even tells you where the next Starbucks is located.”

Iris says. “We really need to stop. I have to go to the bathroom.” Denise says, “No, we are not stopping, we are already late!” Suzy chimes in, “yes, stopping would be good. I can call home.” Carol informs them that the hotel is only 38 miles away and they should just all be patient and wait until they get there. WILL THEY EVER GET THERE?

Do you see a little bit of yourself in each of these women? Maybe one or two of them are more like you? This story is for illustration purposes.

Denise is Dominant. She likes to be in charge, makes decisions quickly, and is a good leader. Denise knows where she is going and is very confident.

Iris is Influential. She is very people oriented. She loves recognition, but somewhat impulsive and not at all detail oriented.

Suzy is Steadfast. She is very family oriented, slow to change, very security minded. Suzy is very easy going and a team player.

Carol is Conscientious. She is the most detailed. She likes a step by step plan. Carol is very analytical and precise. Her organization is one of her best skills.

Once you learn to appreciate the differences in people, your ability to relate and communicate increases. I have always strived to surround myself with people who are strong where I am weak. It’s so much easier to spend time developing what you are good at than trying become someone who you are not. What do you think? I’d really like to know!

<I just got this note from Carrie Wilkerson, The Barefoot Executive and I wanted to pass it along>(Since I am one of the teachers in this series, I will be on the call tonight if you have questions) Here is a chance to experience my Direct Sales Mentoring first hand! “Stop the Insanity - Let’s Talk! I have heard from FIVE different women in the direct sales industry in the last week who have told me - in one way or another – that they feel like a failure because they have not reached the level of success they believed they would when they first joined the industry. When I spoke to the last one, she told me, “I know I can be a success in this business. I love the products! I just don’t know how to translate that into sales and recruits.” This is why I feel it is important for me to open up the Barefoot Boot Camp to as many direct sales and network marketing pros as possible! You will find out exactly how to grow a successful business. How to sell more, recruit more, and be an effective and efficient leader with integrity . The Barefoot Boot Camp starts in just a few days, and I will close registration at noon on Wednesday, so the team and I can prepare. I’m still getting emails though from people who have questions. Women who want to know just one more thing before they join. I don’t want anyone to miss out on the chance to benefit, so we are going to hold a FREE LIVE call TUESDAY night so anyone can find out more and have their question answered right then. Now that you have a basic understanding of the four different personality types, and hopefully know what your strongest ones are, what do you do with that new information?

Most people are highest in one or two types. It’s easy to relate and communicate to those of us who are similar. The real sales and leadership challenge is to be able to connect to those who are the opposite.

For example, my personality strentghts are equally D & I. When I first became a Sales Director, most of the consultants in my unit were also strong in those areas. (like attracts like) So initially my meetings were geared towards lots of recognition and quick training segments.

As my unit started to grow and include consultants with different personality types, my leadership was becoming more difficult. One day I looked out into my Sales Meeting to a group of women who were not “getting it” and I thought “ who ARE these people and what is wrong with them?” It seemed like I was speaking to a group of rocks! (no response at all)

There was nothing wrong with them, they just needed for me to adjust my meeting format to have segments that each one would relate to.

Here are some quick examples of what I did to reach each type:

  • I started publishing a weekly newsletter that I handed out at the meeting. One side of the newsletter had all the important deadlines, dates, upcoming events, etc. (for the detail oriented S & C personalities) The other side was recognition for anything that consultants had done that past week that was noteworthy. ( for the D & I personalities)

  • I delegated the position of “greeter” to one of my consultants who was an S personality to get her involved. That got her involved and comfortable with meeting guests and new consultants.

  • I started assigning training segments to be done by some of my D personalities. Since they are result driven, by doing the research to teach, they were learning more quickly than I could teach them.

NEXT SEGMENT- understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each type and how to best help them.

This week I was interviewed on PodTalkDivas radio show. Don’t worry if you missed it, you can still download the mp3 version or listen to the recording.

The interview was requested after the success of Operation Soldier Care. This was a project that was a collaboration of Trish Forant of emailourmilitary.com and Phyllis Zimbler Miller (author of Mrs. Lieutenant- A Sharon Gold Novel) and myself. The three of us “met” using social media, particularly twitter. The practical application of using social media to grow your direct sales business is discussed on this podcast. I hope that you can learn from our success.

Now that we have a successful model, we are considering another partnership to promote gifts for military family members for the holidays.
