Last night we interviewed Donna Fox on our weekly WHIM Today Talkshoe podcast.  Since there are three of us hosting the show, (Michelle Trent. June Mattiza, and myself) we take turns asking questions. This gives a very different level of sharing because we are coming from different backgrounds, regions of the country, and even business expertise. Donna is a wealth of information because she has a background as an attorney, but also is a polypreneur ( has multiple businesses!)  One of the key things that she said resonated with me because it is a common answer that I get when I ask people “who had the biggest impact on your life?” Donna’s immediate answer was, her family. (If you recall, Carrie had a similar answer last week)

Since I have worked at home my entire almost 23 year journey with my direct sales business (with the same company the entire time) I am qualified to give my opinion on the impact of a WAHM. When my children were small, they always volunteered me for any event that the teacher asked “who’s mom doesn’t work”? (They never quite understood that what I was doing with my business was work)  When you work your business around your family’s schedule you are able to be there for anything that is important to them- field trips. class plays, parties, etc. Those are some of the things that you children will remember when they grow up- the time that you spent with them.

I am NOT condeming those who are in a position where they have to go to work outside of the home to make ends meet. In fact, most of the independent beauty consultants in my unit started out that way, working another job while they built their business. When a parent has a strong desire to spend more time with his/her family, they are willing to make short time sacrifices to reach that goal.  Time management is crucial when working from home. You must understand that with a flexible schedule time spent in one area means time away from another. The difference is YOU decide when and where you work!

It has been said that “what is caught is much more powerful than what it taught”. I found this to be particularly true with my direct sales home business. Your children will learn by watching you set and achieve goals, handle success and failure along the way, and emulate you. My oldest son Bob, is an engineer for Nucor Steel.  He was able to negotiate with his employer to work from home (even though his employer is about 750 miles away) while my daughter-in-law, Amy finishes law school at Duquesne University. My two granddaughters have already started to experience the same benefits to having a parent available for those same events!

Being a parent (and someday a grandparent, if you are blessed) is the single most important thing that you will ever do in this lifetime. Your legacy is what you leave behind in the lives of others. So if you are a stay at home mom or dad right now, don’t ever apologize to anyone for not “working” outside the home. If circumstances in you life require you to find additional income and your desire is to stay home with your family, why not consider a home business. Last night we had a great interview with Carrie Wilkerson (the Barefoot Executive) on our weekly talkshow- WHIM Today. WHIM Today was created to provide resources for Mompreneurs, Home Business Women, Internet Marketers, and all women who are balancing many different income streams along with a family. One of the topics that we discussed is how to select a coach, mastermind group or find support for your business. Here are a few suggestions that Carrie shared:

• Start by connecting with that person and developing a relationship. Do you have enough in common to make this coaching valuable? For example, do you have the same style, values, and action implementation ?
• Do your “market research” by subscribing to that person’s ezine, reviewing some home resources (e-books, downloads, etc) Study that first and decide if you can implement some of the strategies used in that training.
• Find testimonials from others and connect with them, asking questions about what is important to you in a mentoring program.
• Consider group coaching first. Many times you will learn from the others who are being coached or mentored because of your common interests, or niche.
• Determine your own personal learning style. Do you need constant accountability? Do you learn better independently with a strategy plan provided by your mastermind or coach? How quickly are you willing to implement what you learn? That is most important in finding a great fit for you.
