Is it possible to conduct your direct sales business using the Golden Rule? Yes, you can! (If you aren’t familiar with the Golden Rule, it’s simple- “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”) Learning to think and live by this creed might seem a bit old fashioned or even corny, but it is the key not only to living an abundant life in business, but it is also the key to building lasting relationships as well.
In my business, and many others it is the business philosophy that allows us to make tough decisions when faced with making them. It’s a moral compass of integrity that sets some apart from others. In fact, Mary Kay started her Company with this principle that has proven to be one of the backbones of the business. Let me give you an example of how it works.
As I am very active in social media as a way of developing relationships, I have made some great friends all over the world. Last week one of my good friends Melody Campbell ( we have never met face to face, but consider each other true friends) featured a guest on her Blog Talk Radio show that inspired me to “Go for No”. (As mentioned in a previous post, I set a goal for 50 “no’s” this month.) I knew Melody was a sharp business woman and could really benefit from another stream of income, so I called her to go over with her the benefits of a “Plan B”.
I started our conversation by telling her my goal, and asking her to help me get there by listening to me. She had many objections, so I thought for sure that she would count as a “no” for me. However, the more I talked, the more intrigued she became. Then the Golden Rule situation presented itself. She shared with me that she had a good friend who was also in the same business who had previously spoken to her about becoming a consultant. At that point, I made it very clear to her, that if she did make that decision, I recommended that she talk to her friend first. That is Golden Rule thinking.
Today she told me that she decided to start her business and I am THRILLED! You might think, why would I care, since I won’t benefit financially at all from her decision? I have been in direct sales long enough to know that it WILL come back to me in some other way. I have seen people ignore the Golden Rule and allow themselves to aggressively pursue everyone, but they never last.
What do you think? Have you discovered the benefit of living your life this way? If not, why not give it a try!
