Have you done a reality check lately on the current condition of your life? Are you blessed and happy, or depressed, hopeless and in despair? To be blessed means to be happy, to be fortunate, or to be envied. Some may equate being blessed or happy to having achieved great material possessions or luxuries. While those things can enhance one’s life, it is not what defines a blessed life. There are those who have all the material possessions one could dream of, but they have miserable and unhappy lives. You may even know of such individuals among your circle of friends or acquaintance; if not, just turn on to some of the media stations that often feature the Rich and Famous, I mean the Rich and Miserable. I am not saying that all rich people are miserable and unhappy. I’m simply making a point that having material things does not define being blessed.
I have not always been a positive person. I remember a time in my life when I used to focus on depressive thoughts. The longer I meditated on things that I was not happy with about my life, the more depressed I got. I developed a habit of stinking thinking and negativity that created a negative force around me. If I wanted my reality to change and to live a life of true blessing, it was time that I changed my focus; hence, the journey began.
Thoughts are like seeds and seeds grow. Whatever you sow, you will reap. It is also true that for every cause, there is an effect. To every action, there is a reaction. These are universal laws or principles that are set in motion and impacts all people, regardless of race, gender, culture, economic status, or religious faith. The law of negativity is as universal as these laws. If you sow negative thoughts everyday and speak pessimistically over your situation, you will experience negative outcomes on a consistent basis.
What you choose to focus on will become your reality. The definition of focus is: a central point, as of attraction, the core, the heart. If you are not happy with your current reality, it is time to refocus. Life constantly throws choices at you every day. Whatever choices you make are seeds that will shape your future.
Consider Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor, one cannot imagine what he had to endure; but he has lived to tell how he was able to survive the inhumane treatment in concentration camps. His focus and his attitude allowed him to endure the darkest moments of his life. Mr. Frankl quotes, “The last of human freedoms – the ability to choose one’s attitude in a given set of circumstances.” Regardless of what you are going through or have gone through, you have the freedom to choose your attitude. Your attitude will determine your altitude in life.
We have all heard how worry will kill you and what you think is what you will become. Your thoughts, your focus, and your attitude have the power to create your surroundings and change your situation whether for good or bad. In 1 Peter 4:7, it says that you must be the boss over your own mind.
As you go through each day, remember, “For as a man thinks within himself, so he become.” What would you like to become in 2009 and beyond? Change your focus, because whatever you choose to focus on will become your reality.
