In Direct Sales, or any home business, it is easy to focus on the negative aspects. Today I am asking you to put on your “big girl panties” and start to take a personal responsibility for your efforts, not the outcome. Remember, it’s your life. How are you designing it? Are you an active participant in it, or just a reactor or victim?

These are all CHOICES that you make. I know that they aren’t always easy, I know that there are times when it is not fun. Motivation comes from within. You will never find it looking elsewhere! But whenever you get knocked down by life, just pick yourself up, and start again! You can do it! I know that someone believes in you, even if you don’t yet believe in yourself.

Find that person and learn from them. Take their wisdom and use it to your benefit. You will be glad that you did! God bless you with abundance from the good choices that you make today and every day!

NancyBarry-Jansson Deciding to Embrace Change

by Nancy Barry-Jansson ( a special guest post for today!)

Previously, I wrote an article about the incredible power of decision, about how just deciding what you want can create the opportunities for that creation to appear in your life. Now, I’d like you to consider whether you’ve made, or are ready to make, the decision to change what isn’t working in your life.

To Decide or Not to Decide: Is That the Question?

A few months ago, during a coaching session, the client brought up three experiences that were upsetting her. To her, these experiences were unrelated, but they all frustrated her. As I listened, I could hear the common thread in what she was saying: All three of her experiences reflected that she felt unappreciated for her hard work, and in some cases, disrespected by people around her. When I brought this to her attention, she was surprised as she had not seen the commonality in her experience until that moment. I told her the good news is that she could decide to change right there, right that minute while we were talking. All she had to do was embrace the decision to change. She could begin by creating positive self-talk affirmations such as

  • I am respected and appreciated by everyone around me, and I respect and appreciate myself!
  • I allow others to respect me and show it in positive ways!
  • Everyone I interact with treats me with respect and appreciation!

‘Tis Easier to Change Than Remain Suffering

The gal I was coaching was ready to make a change. She had reached a point where she no longer wanted to experience those same frustrations, and she recognized a long-standing pattern in her life that needed to change if she was going to move forward. So, she embraced these new affirmations immediately, saying them with conviction and belief that she was already creating what she wanted. Within 24 hours, she reported noticing respectful and appreciative behavior all around her…particularly from the people she previously felt were not behaving that way! Her discovery? What she wanted was all around her as soon as she was open to seeing it. While she was convinced that others were disrespectful, that is how she perceived others’ behavior and that is what showed up for her. As soon as she changed her focus, what she perceived and experienced changed as well. When we talked afterward, she shared that making this shift in perception helped her to appreciate life so much more than before she had reached out for help during coaching. That comment made it clear to me that choosing to make positive changes is far more rewarding than staying in suffering. Our egos will convince us that change is not possible…it’s too difficult…it can’t be done…it’s better to stay where you are. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Changing is really easier than most people think, and it starts by making the decision to change.

Are You Ready for Change?

In the above example, if she had not been ready to change, she wouldn’t have been able to do the affirmations with feeling and would not have seen any changes. She may even have found excuses why she didn’t have time or energy to say the affirmations…or kept forgetting to say them. This is just resistance to change. Most people think change will be too painful, but the truth is NOT changing is more painful. How do you know you are ready for change? You can feel it. You know you are ready when you realize what you are experiencing is not working for you, when you are open to suggestions for shifting (like saying affirmations), when you can feel your life could be better and you are no longer willing to repeat the same mistakes. You can feel it inside yourself that it’s time…and, if you aren’t sure you can do it by yourself, you begin considering reaching out for help. Likewise, when you aren’t ready, you’ll find all kinds of excuses to not reach out for help. Suddenly, you’ll create tons of reasons that tell you, “now isn’t the right time”.

This is Your Life: There’s No Wrong Answer

Keep in mind that there is no wrong answer when it comes to your life. If you are choosing to stay where you are, that is because it is right for what you need to experience in this moment. As soon as you are ready to embrace change, trust that you will find the help you need and begin taking appropriate steps. In the meantime, love and accept yourself for who you are and how wonderful your life really is!

I have always been told to treat my customers like they are “pure gold”. It takes so much more time and effort to attract a new customer than it ever does to maintain one.

How do you maintain good customer relations? (This is particularly valuable when you sell a consumable product that produces reorders)

  • When you spend time with a customer, listen to her, discover her wants, needs, and personal interests. (I try to record as much as I can right away because I don’t want to forget)
  • Start developing that relationship from the very beginning. Tell her what to expect from you in customer service. I personally still touch base monthly with all of my customers via phone and/or email.
  • When you find out that they are going through a rough time, send a card, or if appropriate a small gift, or even a meal.
  • I send out a birthday card to all of my customers offering to get together with me for some pampering and a special discount. (some have told me that is the only card they got!)
  • Celebrate their new babies, weddings, and other life changes by acknowledging it with an email , call or  card.
  • Let them know as often as you can how much you appreciate them. After all, you don’t OWN your customers. They make a choice to shop with you. Make sure that they know that!
  • Although offering a sale from time to time will attract customers, focusing on the relationship more than the discount will keep them. I don’t discount my products very often. So if they are “waiting” for a sale, they are sure to run out unless they stocked a huge quantity of products. ( in that case, why not recruit them?)
  • At the end of every year, I send out a thank you card to my customers rewarding their loyalty with a discount that is based on their loyalty to me. This  will not encourage taking other people’s customers, just showing mine how much I appreciate them. Click here to see the card that I use.

Once you start to understand the value of a customer and show them how much you care, you will begin to have second and even third generation customers and many more referrals than ever before because they will be eager to share you with their friends and coworkers!

This is a time of year when it’s very visible how children dream and can hardly wait for the upcoming holidays. When a new consultant starts her business, she is very much like that child- full of hopes and dreams. Somewhere along the way there are times when those dreams are lost. Perhaps it’s when setbacks or percieved failures occur along the way. It doesn’t have to be that way! Don’t ever lose the ability to dream and have hope for a better future! If you are going to dream, why not dream big? Make it worth anticipating! The best part is, by doing this, you increase your chances of making your dreams come true! Isn’t that a great way to live?

Almost every time that I have been interviewed, one of the questions that I am asked is “What is your SECRET to success?” I don’t believe that there really are any secrets, but the attribute that is most valuable for success is persistence.

I can teach you just about everything else that you need to learn in Direct Sales Mentoring, but in order to achieve it all, you need to have the ability to bounce back when adversity comes your way. Successful people are not those who never encounter obstacles, just those who persist no matter what comes their way.

I like to read biographies because there is so much to learn from the success of others. The common denominator in most biographies that I have read is the attitude that takes them from failure to success. We all have times when it appears that we are not on the right road to success. If you hear about someone who has had a direct path to the top, without any challenges, I question their honesty or authenticity of the story.

In my own personal journey as a WAHM, there have been so many times that I thought that success was nearly impossible. I’m not afraid to try new things- in fact, I thrive on it! Wisdom comes from the times when things don’t go the way that we planned. The real key is having the discernment to make a decision on when to shift or change directions. Sometimes success is just around the corner!

If your business today is not at all the way that you anticipated it would be, start by looking within. Ask yourself if you have a positive attitude. Do you expect great things? Have you mastered all of the skills necessary to achieve your goals? Remember, school is never out for the pro!

When trying a different marketing idea or approach, have you given it enough time to make a decision on the outcome? I have seen many women jump from one idea to another, one job to another, one company to another without allowing enough time to taste the victory in any area. Do you have a mentor or mastermind group to coach you? I recommend following those who have already accomplished that what you aspire to do!

I can teach you the skills and give you the attitude that is required for your success. Perfect practice makes perfect results, but the one thing that I can’t give you is persistence. You can’t purchase it or barter for it. Persistence is the magic ingredient that will take you from mediocre to magnificent!

Keep going, even if the road ahead is uncertain and frightening. Ask for directions if you are lost. Just never, ever give up! It will be worth it, I promise you!
