While we are all celebrating the huge victories of Michael Phelps winning an unprecedented 8 gold medals for the USA swim team I wanted to examine what contributed to his success and how it might apply to all of our businesses. I taught all of my sons to swim before they learned to walk. They were competing on the National level all the way though college, so I spent alot of time in pools at swim meets! Of course, watching him do what has never done before was a huge interest to me.

In reading his interview on Good Morning America here is what I learned:

Question to Phelps:

“What do you think separates the people who are merely gifted from those like you who in this instance, won?”
 Phelps’ answer:

“For me when I watch other sports, when I watch Tiger Woods, when I watch [tennis player] Roger Federer, when I watch [tennis player] Rafael Nadal, the best athletes can compete under any circumstances.  No matter what it is, no matter what the pressure, you can always overcome whatever is put in your way.”

Mary Kay Ash had a phrase that she always used. “Hitch your wagon to a star”. What she meant by that is find someone who is doing what you want to do and learn from them.  That has always worked well for me. In order to personally sell as much as I had to do to be Queen of Personal Sales in Mary Kay, I had to find an elite group of women who had already done that and ask them to share with me. I asked specific questions on setting my goal, marketing strategies, everything that I could think of that nobody else could teach me. I then aligned myself with a “power partner”. Somebody else who was committed to working towards a huge goal made all the difference!

So, if you want to achieve something that you have never achieved before you must first, surround yourself with positive people, big thinkers. Then find someone who has already done what you aspire to do. Learn all that you can from them. Let them help you set your goal, break it down, and strategize. Be accountable. Last year I mentored one of my consultants to the position of First Runner up in the Mary Kay Beauty Consultant Court of Sales by doing just that. (She is West Coast and I am East Coast.) I am looking for a few who may benefit from my mentoring.  You will know who you are. Anyone else who has a home business can learn by following my blog. I am willing to share and passionate about empowering others to reach new heights!

I definately need some help finding a’star’ to hitch my wagon to. I love my Director, she is great, but if I am understanding your comment correctly, I need to find someone who is doing what I want to be doing, right? I want to be able to build my business so I can replace it with my day j.o.b. My Director works a full time job and is a sales Director, and likes it that way. However, she is so busy with both that we have monthly meetings (if even then) and I feel like I need more to plug in to. I would never ever leave her unit, and would never advocate such, but is it wrong for me to seek out the advice of others and be mentored by others besides my own Director? I would cut off my arm before I ever hurt her feelings. I guess I feel guilty saying that I need more than what I am getting in my unit.
